2040 or what will NHS100 be like?
The aim of 2040 is to create solutions that will ensure the NHS is flourishing in 2040.
The Development of a Network
In the last 40 years we have tried to develop the NHS through bureaucracies and markets; both have a part to play but they are not effective means of creating solutions. The most efficient means of creating solutions is through a network, a social network consisting of people who know and trust one another and a neural network namely one in which ideas flow from one member of the network throughout the whole network and come back reinforced and expanded. This process is sometimes called a Complex Adaptive System.
Properly designed such a network can help solutions emerge, solutions that require more money, in fact solutions for a world where there will be less money and much less carbon.
Network Membership
Membership of the Network will be open to anyone who will be working for the NHS in 2040 and who has already shown commitment to improving the NHS in addition to providing clinical care of the highest quality. Examples of groups who would qualify for members include
Clinical Advisors,
Darzi Fellows
Members of BAMMBINO
Members should be grouped into cohorts by the years of recruitment.
Reticulants
A small number of reticulants are needed. These include:-
A high quality communicator, for example, someone who understands policy and is written for a broadsheet or journal.
A young clinician with experience in open problem solving namely the use of the internet to generate questions and solutions.
An Information Scientist to manage the knowledge.
An Administrator to make sure that it all hangs together.
Elders
Although the focus will be on harnessing the creativity of people who will be working in 2040, the benefits of the mistakes made by Elders should not be underestimated. People who are willing to share openly the experience and in particular what has gone wrong will be very welcome to join us associates.
Objectives
The specific objectives of the Network include
To generate ideas for health service which will have to run with less money and much less carbon.
To find existing organisations willing to test these ideas.
To involve the National Institute for Health Research to ensure that these ideas are properly evaluated.
To support the intellectual development of the members.
To develop communities of interest (components of the network.)
To provide a creative experience for members and organisations whose members get involved.
Ways of working
This will evolve. As can be seen from the resource plan there is no large budget for software or website development identified because it is envisaged that most of the tools that will be used will be freely available in addition big companies like Cisco will be asked if they would like to second people to work as interns within the Network. In addition, links will be established with the multitude of small software and app developers that are now emerging.
Book a launch event to be held at The Royal College of Physicians, handy for walking in Regents Park, on an afternoon or early evening ; this should be linked to webinar and virtual events to take place on the same day. All revolutions need a march; David sometimes wins
Communication Strategy
We would ask the journal such as the Health Services Journal, BMJ and Lancet if they would like to second young people . Someone will also be working in 2040 on our Communication Strategy.
